Leeds United’s world class football academy have just been promoted to the top division for the U23s team and are now competing with the biggest academy sides across the UK. We follow the team as they compete and catch the eye of coach Marcelo Bielsa to try to break into the Leeds first team and play in the Premier League.

Breaking Through

As the season progresses our U23s are feeling the strain of training under Marcelo Bielsa – the only way to get up to standard is to play games at full intensity. New recruits to the side also struggle with the levels of effort demanded. There is reward to the exertion put in as some of the U23s break through to play in a Leeds first team Carabao Cup match, with opportunities for Premier League debuts.

Frustrations

The U23s side are struggling, victims of their own success as players who are graduating to the first team are now unavailable for U23 matches. The strain shows on the squad as games get tougher, but injuries to first team starters mean more potential opportunities for the academy boys to advance and play in the Premier League.

Fight Back

A poor run of results has taken a toll on the U23s with frustrations boiling over and relegation looks to be a real risk. However, there is a real sense of optimism in the side as more and more academy players are getting chances to debut for the first team. The team are rocked by massive news from the very top of the club…

All Change

With new manager Jesse Marsch installed at the top of the club with 12 games left in the season, the growing injury list makes it clear the academy players will be fighting relegation battles in both the U23 league and the Premier League for the first team. There’s opportunity too for academy coach Mark Jackson as Jesse also calls him up for first team duties, bringing in new U23 manager.

Fight For Survival

It’s make or break for the academy side with just three games left to avoid relegation – a home game at Elland road against Man City beckons. However the U23’s continue to be weakened as the best players are called up into the first team’s own relegation battle – and we see seven academy players named in the squad for Leeds’ dramatic final day Premier League match against Brentford.
