Yale stunned by Dartmouth late, will play Harvard in Ivy tiebreaker
The Ivy is the only conference that awards its automatic NCAA bid to the regular-season champion.
Maldunas managed to get behind his defender for John Golden's inbounds pass with 2 seconds left, getting the shot off in time and drawing a foul with 0.5 seconds showing on the clock.
He missed the free throw, but Dartmouth (14-14, 7-7 Ivy League) already had all the points it needed to capitalize on Yale's shooting woes down the stretch.
The Bulldogs (22-9, 11-3) didn't hit a field goal after Matt Townsend's layup with 4:44 left gave Yale a 53-50 lead. The Bulldogs, trying for their first outright conference title and NCAA tournament berth since 1962, also hurt themselves by going 1-for-2 from the foul line three times in the last 1:44.
The Bulldogs went 0-for-3 from the floor and 5-for-9 from the free throw line in the final 4:43.
Tommy Carpenter led Dartmouth with 13 points. Miles Wright scored 12 and Maldunas finished with 10 points for the Big Green, who needed the win to remain eligible for the postseason.
Makai Mason led Yale with 19 points. Justin Sears scored 14 and Javier Duren finished with 11 for Yale.
With Yale's loss, Harvard's run as Ivy League champion continues. This is the team's fifth straight Ivy crown.
Yale had gone a game up over Harvard with a road victory over the Crimson on Friday.
"Rematch, baby," Crimson backup point guard Matt Fraschilla yelled.
