Goodwin scores 23, Memphis holds off Ohio State 81-76 in OT

"Really good win for us," Memphis coach Josh Pastner said. "Really gutty win against a good Ohio State program."

Dedric Lawson and Ricky Tarrant Jr. each scored 16 points for Memphis (3-2), which held Ohio State to 0-for-6 shooting in the extra session. Avery Woodson scored 11 for the Tigers.

JaQuan Lyle scored 18, Marc Loving finished with 17 and Keita Bates-Diop added 10 for Ohio State (2-3), which has dropped three straight. The last time the Buckeyes scored 75 or more points and lost was the 2007 NCAA championship game against Florida.

"I thought our guys played really, really hard," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. "It was an odd game to get a flow going. ... College basketball to me has become momentum. Obviously they had a little more than we did."

Memphis went up 75-70 with 2:25 left in regulation on Goodwin's three-point play, before Ohio State rallied in a game that was back and forth throughout. Tate scored at the rim to get the Buckeyes within three, and Bates-Diop's 3-pointer with just under a minute remaining knotted the game at 75.

Both teams missed wild tries in the last 10 seconds of regulation, and that sent it to overtime.

"We do a great job as a team of staying even-keeled," Goodwin said. "That's one of our mottos."

Ohio State made three 3-pointers in a span of 77 seconds early in the second half, fueling an 11-2 run that turned a tie game into a 48-39 lead for the Buckeyes. Bates-Diop made the first one, Lyle then connected and Loving added the third on a breakout to cap the flurry.

But the Tigers answered with a 14-2 run of their own over the next 4 minutes, setting up the down-to-the-wire finish. Neither team led by more than five points in the final 16:23 of the second half, along with the 5 overtime minutes.

"The thing about overtime, we had some unbelievable looks," Matta said. "I don't know if we could have gotten better shots. ... They just didn't go down for us."

The game followed No. 1 Kentucky's 84-63 win over South Florida in the opener of the doubleheader.

Ohio State: The Buckeyes had the home bench at AmericanAirlines Arena, meaning they were occupying the one that noted Ohio State fan LeBron James used in his four seasons with the Heat. ... Jae'Sean Tate has grabbed at least five rebounds now in 29 of his 40 collegiate games. ... It was the 398th game for Ohio State under Matta.

HOME WARRIORS

This was the only game that will take this season's Tigers away from Memphis before the calendar flips to 2016. The Tigers played their first four games at home, and will now play their next seven back in Memphis before visiting South Carolina on Jan. 2. "We needed this," Pastner said.
