Ridley leads Texas to 116-50 win over Texas-San Antonio

Mack, a freshman guard, scored a season-best 17 points as Texas defeated Texas-San Antonio 116-50 Tuesday night.

Before Tuesday, Mack had converted just 7 of 43 shots, including 5 of 24 3-pointers.

"It gets stressful after a while," Mack said. "I'm not gonna lie. I was down on myself a little bit. I was kind of wondering why. This is definitely a confidence booster."

Against Texas-San Antonio he hit 7 of 11, making 2 of 5 3-pointers.

"He's a guy who has always identified as a scorer, a guy who pays a lot of attention to whether the ball's going in or not," Texas coach Shaka Smart said. "As a coach, you can really try to emphasize the process but the reality is he gets a little bummed out when the ball's not going in."

Mack wasn't the only Longhorn freshman with a season-high in scoring. Kerwin Roach had 14 points.

Texas (5-3) shot 64.7 percent, its fourth-highest mark since the school began tracking that record in 1961-62.

George Matthews led Texas-San Antonio (1-8) with 12 points.

The Longhorns made a season-high 15 3-point baskets, reaching double figures in treys for the third time in the last four games.

Texas led 56-17 at halftime after making eight 3-point baskets. Freshman Eric Davis hit three of them in as many attempts. During one 17-second burst, Davis made a 3-pointer, stole the ball while the Longhorns applied Smart's renowned full-court pressure, and hit another trey.

Texas-San Antonio committed 24 turnovers.

The Longhorns didn't let up to start the second half. The 6-foot-10, 290-pound Ridley made two layups and two dunks during the first four minutes against the smaller Roadrunners.

One player has exceled during the Roadrunners' poor start to the season. Senior guard Ryan Bowie began the game averaging 19.4 points and converting 46.3 percent of his 3-point shots. Though he is only 6-1, Bowie led the team with 7.3 rebounds a game, more than double any of his teammates.

But Bowie struggled against Texas, missing 8 of 10 shots while scoring 10 points. He missed all six of his shots in the first half.

TIP-INS

Texas-San Antonio: The Roadrunners failed to score until nearly six minutes into the game. By that point, they missed five shots, committed four turnovers, and fell behind 10-0. . UTSA is 0-7 all-time against Texas. This was the first time the teams met since November, 2007.

Texas: Prince Ibeh, the Longhorns' backup center, missed the game with a lower back injury. Ibeh landed hard on his back when he was fouled while attempting to catch an alley-oop pass against Samford last Friday. . The game was so one-sided that three Texas walk-on players combined to score 14 points. The 6-10, 190-pound Danny Newsome hit three 3-pointers in four minutes. . The Longhorns will face their highest-ranked opponent so far this season on Saturday when No. 3 North Carolina comes to Austin. Texas is 6-3 all-time against the Tar Heels, including victories the last two seasons.

DISAPPOINTED IN CROWD

Attendance was listed as 9,657, but the actual crowd was substantially smaller. Texas center Cam Ridley said he was disappointed.

"That's a heartbreaker," Ridley said. "Not many people are gonna come to a game like this, finals week. But. we go to one of the biggest schools in the country."
