Oregon pulls away from Long Beach State 94-73

The attention to detail, especially on defense, just wasn't there, so with the Ducks down six early in the second half, Altman went for the wake-up call during an attention-getting timeout.

"I was yelling at them a little bit to get focused and that we were going to have to get some stops," Altman said. "We weren't going to be able to shoot our way out of it."

Oregon got the message along with four quick stops during a 9-0 run to retake the lead, starting with seven straight points from Dillon Brooks, who finished with 21 as the Ducks pulled away to a 94-73 victory over the 49ers.

Chris Boucher had his fourth double-double in five games with 14 points and 10 rebounds as the Ducks (9-2) had six scorers in double figures and hit a season high for points. Freshman Tyler Dorsey added 17 points in his first start since spraining his knee in a loss at UNLV two weeks ago.

Travis Hammonds led LBSU (6-7) with a career-high 27 points and seven rebounds. Roschon Prince added 15 points and Maryland transfer Nick Faust had 14.

Oregon finished the game by outscoring the 49ers 52-25 over most of the second half.

"What's disappointing is that we wasted a great effort by one guy to keep us in there until we could get other guys into a flow," LBSU coach Dan Monson said. "We just put too much effort on our offense.

"To give up 52 points in the last 15 minutes is unacceptable."

The Ducks finally gained some separation after Hammonds went to the bench for his fourth foul with 12:30 to play and Long Beach State leading 52-51.

Oregon went on a 30-13 run over the next nine minutes, fueled by 10 points from Boucher, to lead 81-65. The final 21-point margin was the largest of the game.

The Ducks were 32 of 62 (51.6 percent) from the floor and a season-best 22 of 24 (91.7 percent) from the foul line.

"You just can't bail people out when you have them down and you have them frustrated," Monson said. "We let them get to the line by fouling."

Boucher and Jordan Bell, who added eight rebounds, helped give Oregon a 42-25 advantage on the glass.

Oregon led the entire first half, going up by six at the 12:19 mark before settling for a 40-39 edge at the break. Boucher kept the Ducks ahead by swatting Hammonds' driving layup attempt out of bounds at the buzzer.

It was one of the few times Oregon slowed down Hammonds, who had a career-high 21 points in the first half when he dropped in his sixth 3-pointer with 24 seconds left. It was twice as many 3s as Hammonds had made in any of 56 previous games.

Hammonds finished 8 of 10 beyond the arc to set a Matthew Knight Arena record for made 3s, and the 49ers were 11 of 27 overall.

CLOSE TO HOME COUNTS

The Ducks' next game, against Alabama in Birmingham on Monday, will be a homecoming of sorts for Dwayne Benjamin, a native of Lafayette, Louisiana, who played at a California junior college before transferring to Oregon. "My whole family will be there and it's the closest (to home) I will play since I've been in college," he said. "It's still just the next game, so I'll try to do my part and try to help us win."

Coach Dana Altman said Benjamin had been putting the touch on teammates to secure enough tickets for everyone making the 450-mile drive. "He deserves it," Altman said. "He's a senior and has done a good job for us, so I hope he has a good one."

Long Beach State: The 49ers have the toughest nonconference strength of schedule of any Oregon opponent so far this season, and it doesn't get any easier with road games at No. 13 Arizona and No. 7 Duke before Long Beach State starts Big West Conference play.
