Seton Hall defeats Rutgers 84-55

Khadeen Carrington scored 18 points and Isaiah Whitehead scored 13 to lead Seton Hall past Rutgers 84-55 in the annual Garden State Hardwood Classic on Saturday.

Angel Delgado notched 14 points and 13 rebounds to earn the Joe Calabrese MVP award.

"It feels great, but I really don't care about that. I care about the big trophy right here," Delgado said, referring to the rivalry game's trophy.

Mike Williams led Rutgers (3-5) with 16 points while Corey Sanders contributed six assists and scored 14.

Rutgers led 16-10 with 14:35 left in the first half on a 3-pointer by Williams, then led 20-11 after a layup by Sanders, assisted by Bishop Daniels, capped a 12-3 run.

Things started to go south for Rutgers from there.

Down 27-26 with just over seven minutes left in the first half, Seton Hall went on a 20-6 run and led 47-34 at halftime.

"They made really tough shots," Delgado said. "But we bounced back and played harder than them."

Rutgers coach Eddie Jordan couldn't agree more.

"Our mental effort wasn't great and if you have a mental effort, your physical effort is sort of second nature and will help you," Jordan said. "We didn't' play smart at either end after 12 minutes or so."

Carrington made a 3-pointer assisted by Michael Nzei to start Seton Hall's big run.

"Khadeen (Carrington) is playing at a really good level right now," Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard said. "I think he's starting to feel very comfortable right now. You can see it in his body language on the offensive end."

Seton Hall pulled away in the second half, leading by as many as 29 and outscoring the Scarlet Knights 37-21. The largest lead of the game came on a 3-pointer by Dalton Soffer with 1:04 left.

Michael Nzei scored 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Seton Hall (6-2).

After starting the season 3-1, Rutgers has lost four straight.

"They get the juice going, they can make you look bad, which they did," Jordan said.

TIP-INS

Rutgers: Junior Deshawn Freeman missed the game with a sore knee. The junior college transfer is expected to be out for two weeks.

Seton Hall: Ismael Sanogo dislocated his shoulder in Seton Hall's loss at George Washington and won't play against Troy on December 10.

CLEANING THE GLASS

Seton Hall dominated Rutgers on the glass, outrebounding the Scarlet Knights 53-32. "I told them I'm not going through rebounding drills guys," Rutgers coach Eddie Jordan said. "That's not in my package as a coach. Rebounding is about heart and nose for the ball and just wanting to get it. That's just not me as a coach."

THREE IN A ROW

Seton Hall has now beaten Rutgers three times in a row. It is the first time Seton Hall has beaten its in-state rivals three times in a row since 1986-1988. "It shows that we're the team in Jersey," Whithead said. Rutgers coach Jordan is now 0-3 against Seton Hall.
