Dartmouth Big Green at Stanford Cardinal

Rosco Allen, Reid Travis lead Stanford past Big Green 64-50

Allen scored 17 points, Reid Travis added 14 points and Stanford returned from a two-week break to beat Dartmouth 64-50 Saturday night.

"I wouldn't say it was rust," Travis said. "We have been playing each other so much I think we were locked in. We needed to play someone else."

Marcus Allen added 12 points for the Cardinal (4-3), who have won two in a row since a three-game slide.

"Rosco is starting to come into his own," Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins said. "He needs to be aggressive and he needs to be one of our scorers. His mindset is one of attacking and he's elevating his game."

Senior point guard Christian Sanders wasn't so lucky. He had a final and 14-page paper due by noon Saturday, though he still found a way to contribute.

"You hope he can make the transition," Dawkins said. "I know he wants to do well."

Connor Boehm scored 11 points to lead the Big Green (3-4), who had won three of their previous four games.

Miles Wright hit a 3-pointer to pull Dartmouth within 55-47 with 5:40 remaining to play, though the Big Green would get no closer and did not score again until Ike Ngwudo hit a 3-pointer with nine seconds left for the final margin.

"Their size hurt us," Dartmouth coach Paul Cormier said. "They keep us from being able to have an effective inside game."

The Cardinal never trailed, opening a double-digit advantage less than eight minutes into the game.

Grant Verhoeven hit a pair of free throws late in the first half to give Stanford a 37-24 lead at halftime.

After Dartmouth drew within eight, Sanders hit a pair of free throws to spark a rally that gave the Cardinal another double-digit advantage.

"He stepped up," Dawkins said. "He gave us a good lead again."

The game featured a rematch of the 1942 NCAA title game, in which Stanford won its only national title in men's basketball.

Dartmouth: The Big Green fell to 3-21 against schools from the Pac-12. One of those victories came against the Cardinal, a 48-47 victory during the 1938-39 season. Dartmouth last beat a Pac-12 team in 1971, 92-82 over Oregon. The Big Green also beat USC in 1955.

Stanford: The Cardinal opened a seven-game home stand with their win over Dartmouth, a span that will extend into January and the beginning of the conference season. Included is a visit from NAIA Carroll College, which is currently undefeated in Frontier Conference play and 7-2 overall. The Fighting Saints have lost three exhibition games to Division I schools this year, including California.
