Cameron Jones scores 23, Radford beats Penn State 86-74

From the opening tip, it was evident to Radford's coach that his squad wasn't lacking any of its hallmark speed.

The Highlanders made good use of it Tuesday in an 86-74 win over Penn State.

"I thought our guys, right from the beginning, set the tone, set the tempo and were able to finish the deal," Jones said.

Cameron Jones made five 3-pointers and scored 23 points for Radford (4-2). Rashun Davis added 18 points and YaYa Anderson scored 14, including four 3-pointers.

Jones and Anderson scored eight points apiece during a 22-9 run the Highlanders used to take control with 8:03 to play.

"We just tried to execute with some pace, whether they were in a man or zone," Jones said. "We knew that pace might create some opportunities for us."

Penn State played zone to keep Davis from driving to the basket, but the Radford guard made them pay with his outside shooting. The Nittany Lions pulled within six with 3:36 left but Davis hit his second 3-pointer with 3:17 remaining to put it out of reach.

Penn State tried to slow Radford's transition with a press-man defense, but the speedy Highlander guards beat them with long passes.

"They explode up the floor," Penn State forward Brandon Taylor said. "That's something we were game planning on and they just did a great job of doing it."

Julian Moore led the Nittany Lions (2-2) with 16 points while Taylor added 15. Penn State turned the ball over just five times.

TIP-INS

Radford: Redford won back-to-back games for the first time this season. It's the team's first two-game winning streak since it followed a Feb. 11 win last season with a victory three days later.

Penn State: Penn State's 12-game home winning streak against non-conference opponents was snapped. The Nittany Lions had also won 10 of their last 11 games before the Thanksgiving break before Tuesday's loss.

BUT THAT DEFENSE

For the second straight game Penn State allowed an opponent to shoot better than 56 percent.

"We're working on our defense every day," Penn State coach Patrick Chambers said. "There's no room for error for us on the defensive end."

MOORE OPTIONS

Moore surpassed his previous career best of 10 and provided a bit of scoring relief with Taylor in foul trouble early.

Moore's offensive outburst was also a hopeful sign for a team looking for more scoring from its bigs.

"He's very capable of being an inside threat and loosening things up on the perimeter," Chambers said.

Forward Donovan Jack was 0-for-3 shooting and center Jordan Dickerson has yet to make a basket this season.

INJURY BUG

Penn State will be without forward Davis Zemgulis for at least another game due to a left MCL sprain. Chambers said the freshman could return in "seven to 10 days."
