Payton II with 16 points, Oregon State beats Nevada 66-62

But the soft-spoken senior is a defensive dynamo, just like dad.

The younger Payton had 16 points and eight rebounds as Oregon State held on to beat Nevada 66-62 on Saturday.

Payton added two steals, setting a program record with 38 consecutive games with a steal. The record was previously held by his father, and Payton downplayed the accomplishment after the game.

"It's just me playing basketball. I do what I do on defense and it just happens I passed (the record). . We'll put it behind us and get ready for the next opponent," Payton said.

Malcolm Duvivier and Stephen Thompson Jr. scored 11 points apiece for Oregon State (6-1).

"I'm proud of the way we gutted out the last eight minutes and got the victory at home when we were certainly up against a lot in the second half," Oregon State coach Wayne Tinkle said.

D.J. Fenner matched a career-high with 24 points, with three 3-pointers. Marqueze Coleman scored 12 points, and Cameron Oliver added six points, 12 rebounds and five blocks for Nevada (5-3).

"I don't think a team could have played any harder than we played. It's no secret we struggle scoring the ball and we missed a lot of layups," said Nevada coach Eric Musselman.

Fenner said that the Wolf Pack took a step in the right direction. "It just kind of tells us that we can compete with any team out there, whether it's the Pac-12, Mountain West or Big West," he added.

The Beavers shot 41 percent from the floor, and held the Wolf Pack to 32.3 percent. Oregon State scored 40 points in the paint, compared to 18 for Nevada.

Both teams shot poorly early, and the Wolf Pack led 11-10 when Payton got in a passing lane and snagged the record-setting steal with 10:06 left in the half.

The Beavers went ahead 30-22 thanks to an 11-0 surge, capped by a Tres Tinkle free throw with 1:10 remaining in the half. Oregon State held Nevada scoreless for 4:30 during the run, and the Beavers had a 30-24 halftime lead.

The Wolf Pack used an 8-0 run, spurred by seven points by Fenner, who made a floating jumper to give Nevada a 36-34 lead with 15:16 remaining. The Beavers had an 8-0 run, capped Payton's layup to take a 58-43 lead with ten minutes left.

Fenner made a pair of free throws to give the Wolf Pack their last lead, 53-52 with 6:17 remaining.

The Beavers used a 13-6 spurt, capped by Thompson's 3-pointer to stretch their lead to 65-59. Coleman answered with a 3-pointer to pull Nevada to 65-62 with 1:28 to go.

Fenner missed a 3-pointer and a layup, and then fouled Olaf Schaftenaar, who split a pair of free throws to cap the scoring.

Coleman and Eric Cooper Jr. missed 3-point attempts to end it.

Nevada: Six of the Wolf Pack's first eight games have been on the road. . Nevada came into the game ranked first in the nation in total blocks with 52, and second in the NCAA with 7.4 blocks per game. The Wolf Pack had 11 blocks against the Beavers. . Despite the loss, Nevada is 5-3 after winning only nine games last season. . Musselman is in his first year leading Nevada.

COACH'S CHEMISTRY

While Musselman has led seven professional teams, including the Golden State Warriors and the Sacramento Kings of the NBA, this is his first head coaching job in the college ranks. Fenner said Musselman has had a deep impact on the Nevada program. "He demands a lot. He pushes us extremely hard on a daily basis and he's a great guy off the court, as well. He's all about team chemistry," Fenner said.
