Que Johnson and Thomas finished with 14 points each. Justin Johnson added 12 points and Anton Waters and Jabari McGhee added 11 points apiece for the Hilltoppers (9-7, 3-0 Conference USA), who won their fifth straight.
Charlotte (7-7, 1-2) led 52-51 with 13:08 left until Justin Johnson tied it at 72 with a pair of free throws with 3:26 left. Jon Davis put Charlotte back in front with a basket that was the 49ers' last lead although they tied it at 76 and 78.
