Rutschmann has big hit in Orioles' 6-3 win over White Sox
The Orioles tagged the Chicago bullpen for all six runs to win for the fourth time in their last five outings.
Jake Burger homered and Eloy Jiménez drove in a run in his return from the 10-day injured list for Chicago, which has dropped three straight and six of eight.
The Orioles trailed 3-0 after six, but rallied with four runs in the seventh, capped by Rutschman’s three-run hit off reliever Reynaldo López (0-1) that gave them the lead for good.
“Adley is Superman right now,” starter Tyler Wells said of the catcher who drew three walks in five at-bats. “He’s done such a great job behind the plate and at the plate as a hitter. He’s done an incredible job.”
Cedric Mullins started the comeback by drawing a bases-loaded walk from Jake Diekman.
Baltimore tacked on two more in the eighth after three consecutive doubles off Jimmy Lambert.
“I don’t want to say we just beat ourselves,” White Sox starter Mike Clevinger said, “but it feels like every game we kind of feel like we beat ourselves.”
Mike Baumann (1-0), the first of four Orioles relievers, got the win. Félix Bautista worked the ninth for his fourth save in five chances.
Clevinger allowed just one hit while striking out five and walking five in the first six for the White Sox, but the comeback erased his shot at winning for the third time in as many starts.
“Clevinger was really good. Tip your hat to him,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “His fastball had a ton of life and was getting by us.
“Once we got to the ’pen, we had a really nice rally.”
Wells lasted 5 1/3 innings for Baltimore after giving up five hits and three runs, including Burger’s second homer of the season.
ROUGH NIGHT
White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf also is the majority owner of the NBA’s Bulls, who were eliminated from postseason play about an hour before the final pitch. The Miami Heat topped the Bulls 102-91 to secure the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.
ROSTER MOVES
Chicago recalled LHP Tanner Banks from Triple-A Charlotte while sending RHP Jesse Scholtens there and claimed utility player Nick Solak off waivers from Seattle on Friday afternoon. RHP Matt Foster (right flexor strain) was placed on the 60-day injured list.
The Orioles recalled RHPs Yennier Cano and Spenser Watkins from Triple-A Norfolk before the game and placed LHP Keegan Akin on the paternity list. Starter Cole Irvin was optioned to Norfolk after Thursday’s win over Oakland after going 0-2 with a 10.66 ERA in his first three starts. Manager Brandon Hyde said the left-hander accepted the assignment in stride.
TRAINER’s ROOM
Orioles: OF Anthony Santander was back in the lineup after missing two starts with a sore back.
White Sox: Jiménez (left hamstring strain) was the designated hitter in the cleanup spot. He’ll likely be the DH for a few more games before getting an outfield start. … The club placed 3B Yoán Moncada (lower back) on the 10-day injury list before the game. He’s missed three straight games and will be eligible to return April 21.
UP NEXT
Baltimore’s Kyle Gibson (3-0, 3.44) faces fellow right-hander Michael Kopech (0-2, 6.75) on Saturday.
