Turner, Marsh hit homers, Phillies beat White Sox 5-2

Turner homered and had three hits, Brandon Marsh also went deep and Philadelphia beat the Chicago White Sox 5-2 on Wednesday.

Taijuan Walker pitched into the seventh inning, and the Phillies had better luck against Mike Clevinger after being held to one hit by Lucas Giolito and three relievers in the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader.

Lured to Philadelphia from the Los Angeles Dodgers with a $300 million, 11-year contract, Turner hit his first home run for the Phillies with a solo shot in the first.

“It’s been a minute,” the two-time All-Star said. “I obviously want to drive the baseball, and today, I kind of got back to that, hit some balls hard. It felt good.”

Turner also singled, stole a base and scored in the third. And he capped a two-run fourth with an RBI double against Tanner Banks, making it 5-2.

“Triple short of the cycle,” manager Rob Thomson said. “Stolen base, played great defense. Made a play up the middle that was a really good play. He had a great ballgame.”

Marsh led off the second with his third home run; he had Philadelphia’s lone hit in Tuesday’s nightcap.

SOLID START

Walker (2-1) gave up two runs and five hits in 6 1/3 innings. He exited after walking Jake Burger to put runners on first and second.

Gregory Soto retired pinch-hitter Romy González on a fly and struck out Lenyn Sosa to end the threat.

Craig Kimbrel pitched around an infield single by Elvis Andrus leading off the eighth. José Alvarado retired all three batters in the ninth for his second save in three chances.

“We have a really good bullpen,” Walker said. “As starters keep going deeper into games, they’ll have more rest, and they’ll be able to come in when they need to come in, instead of coming in early in the games.”

WHITE SOX STRUGGLE

Clevinger (2-1) lasted just three innings, allowing three runs and six hits on 75 pitches in another rough outing against the defending National League champions. The right-hander failed to record an out starting for San Diego in Game 4 of last year’s NLCS, and Philadelphia went on to win the series 4-1.

Andrew Vaughn hit a two-run homer in the first. But the White Sox lost for the sixth time in eight games.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Phillies: LHP Ranger Suárez (left forearm tightness) is scheduled to throw about 35 pitches in a simulated game Saturday, Thomson said. Suarez, who has been sidelined all season, threw 25 pitches to Bryce Harper and Cristian Pache in a simulated game Tuesday.

White Sox: 3B Yoán Moncada (lower back soreness) will probably need to go on a rehab assignment before he returns from the 10-day injured list, manager Pedro Grifol said. “If he does go on one, it’s because he plays both sides of the ball and third base is a reactionary position,” he said. “There’s some diving involved. There’s a lot of movement.” Moncada is eligible to be activated Friday. He has not played since April 9.

UP NEXT

Phillies: LHP Matt Strahm (1-1, 2.13 ERA) looks to bounce back from a rough outing as the Phillies open a four-game home series Thursday against the Colorado Rockies. Strahm didn’t make it out of the third inning in a 13-0 loss at Cincinnati on Saturday.

White Sox: RHP Michael Kopech (0-2, 6.32) seeks his first win when the White Sox open a three-game series at Tampa Bay on Friday. LHP Josh Fleming (0-0, 6.10) starts for the Rays.
