Bart's routine fly drops for an RBI double as Giants deal Phillies 3rd straight loss

With a runner on first and two outs in the fourth inning, Zack Wheeler got Bart to pop up just behind first base. Phillies first baseman Kody Clemens lost track of the ball in the air and a sliding attempt at a catch by second baseman Bryson Stott was unsuccessful, allowing Casey Schmitt to score.

"It was a tough sky," Wheeler said. “It was a tough play. Those types of things are going to happen, so you’ve just got to try to bear down and just make your pitch and help out the best that you can.”

LaMonte Wade Jr. followed with an RBI single to give San Francisco a 4-2 lead.

Kyle Schwarber homered to center with two outs in the ninth to bring Philadelphia within a run, but Camilo Doval struck out J.T. Realmuto to earn his 10th save in 11 chances.

The Giants’ bullpen combined to allow one run over 5 2/3 innings after starter Alex Cobb lasted just 3 1/3. Cobb matched a career high with five walks and surrendered two runs before being removed in the fourth.

“Pretty embarrassing,” Cobb said. “The ball wasn’t going where I wanted it to go. Fortunately, I had some hard-hit balls hit at people and they made plays, but it was definitely a grind.”

Taylor Rogers (1-2) pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts, earning his first win as a member of the Giants.

“The bullpen in general just did a fantastic job picking us up tonight," San Francisco manager Gabe Kapler said. “And we certainly needed it.”

Wheeler (3-3) struck out eight in six innings, but allowed four runs on nine hits and a walk in the loss.

“Wheeler pitched great,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. “He pitched better than his line, for sure.”

Thairo Estrada and Michael Conforto had RBI singles for San Francisco, which beat Philadelphia for the fifth straight game.

Stott had an RBI single for Philadelphia, which left 12 men on base and went 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position.

“We’re just going through one of those times right now,” Thomson said. “We’ve just got to keep grinding.”

ROSTER MOVES

The Phillies optioned LHP Bailey Falter to Triple-A Lehigh Valley and recalled RHP Erich Uelmen. Falter allowed six runs, all unearned, in 4 1/3 innings in Monday night's loss to fall to 0-7.

“Basically, it’s just a reset,” Thomson said. “Go down there, get outs, get some confidence.”

TRAINER’S ROOM

Giants: RHP Luke Jackson (recovery from Tommy John surgery) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday after pitching a scoreless inning for Class A San Jose on Sunday.

UP NEXT

RHP Taijuan Walker (3-2, 5.75 ERA) starts the series finale Wednesday afternoon for the Phillies. The Giants counter with RHP Ross Stripling (0-2, 7.14).
