Corbin Carroll has 3 hits, Diamondbacks beat Phillies 4-3 for 9th win in 11 games

“I think that there’s a piece of confidence that it creates,” Carroll said. “At the same time, we have a group of guys that have that inner belief, no matter what is going on in the field.”

At 29-20, Arizona moved nine games over .500 for the first time since Sept. 11, 2018, when it was 77-68.

“We're in a really good spot because we have a positive energy that we're going to get the job done,” Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. extended his hitting streak to 16 games — the longest active run in the majors — with a leadoff double in the eighth off Seranthony Dominguez (1-2). After advancing to third on a passed ball by J.T. Realmuto, Gurriel scored on Carroll's single to left field through a drawn in infield.

“I knew he was going to be coming with a fastball and I had a feeling that they were going to be pinch-hitting behind me,” Carroll said. “I figured if he threw something over the plate, I was going to try and get the job done.”

Dominic Fletcher added a big defensive play in the bottom of the eighth, making a sliding catch on Kyle Schwarber's liner in center with two on and two out.

“He took the game in his hands right there,” Carroll said. “If he doesn't make that catch, we're probably chasing a run. But I have confidence in him that he'll make that catch 10 out of 10 times.”

Arizona has followed all four innings where the Phillies have scored in the series with runs of its own in the top half of the following inning to either regain or extend the lead.

“It just happens that way,” Carroll said. “I think it has an ability to take them out of it, and it shows we can be level-headed and to continue to compete.”

Gabriel Moreno hit a two-run homer for the Diamondbacks, and Emmanuel Rivera had two hits. Arizona starter Ryne Nelson allowed one run and three hits in six innings. Jose Ruiz (2-0) got the win and Miguel Castro earned his fifth save with clean ninth inning.

Kody Clemens drove in two runs, and Bryce Harper had two hits for the Phillies. They have lost seven of their last nine.

“We have to keep trying to have good at bats and doing things we can do to be that team,” Harper said. “There's nothing we can really talk about besides the fact that we have to get the job done. We're not doing it."

Alec Bohm had a pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh for Philadelphia to tie it.

“I thought we started slow with the bats, but I thought the at-bats late in the game were good,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. “We got the momentum right there and gave it right back. That's where you have to shut down the inning and maintain your momentum and we just couldn't do it.”

Phillies: OF Brandon Marsh was scratched from the starting lineup an hour before the first pitch because of right shoulder inflammation. Marsh has been in a slump at the plate and has seen his average dip from .329 on April 30 to .262, going 6 for 45 in May.
