Coleman scores 2, Vladar gets 3rd career shutout as Flames beat Devils 3-0

Flames catch fire with 2 third-period goals in just 28 seconds

Jonathan Huberdeau also scored for Calgary.

Jacob Markstrom finished with 29 saves for the Devils, who were shut out for the first time this season after totaling 12 goals in winning their previous two games.

The game was scoreless until Coleman scored on a deflection with 5:34 remaining. Huberdeau doubled the lead 28 seconds later, and Coleman added an empty-netter with 3:15 to go.

Vladar’s best stop came off Jack Hughes on a second period breakaway.

Takeaways Devils: New Jersey lost 6-foot-4 left wing Nathan Bastian (jaw) late in the first period. He did not return after he instigated a fight with 5-9 left wing Ryan Lomberg, who landed a barrage of left hands to Bastian’s chin in a one-sided fight that came after Bastian took issue with Lomberg’s heavy hit on Paul Cotter along the sideboards.

Flames: After scoring 24 goals through the first six games, Calgary has been held to just nine over the last five games.

Key moment Scoreless through 54 minutes, the winning goal came when defenseman Kevin Bahl, who came to the Flames in the deal that sent Markstrom to the Devils, fired a slap shot from the blue line that Coleman deflected in front.

Key stat After starting the year 5 for 15 on the power play, the Flames have failed to score on their last 20 opportunities with the extra man, a stretch that goes back six full games and two additional periods.

Up Next Devils at Edmonton on Monday to finish a three-game trip, and Flames host Edmonton on Sunday.
