Presbyterian Blue Hose at Duke Blue Devils

Tricia Liston, Haley Peters lead No. 3 Duke past Presbyterian

The junior guard had 21 points with nine rebounds, five steals and four assists, helping the No. 3 Blue Devils to a 84-45 rout of Presbyterian on Saturday.

Haley Peters and Chelsea Gray added 21 and 12 points, respectively, for Duke (1-0). Gray also had six assists and six steals.

"Tricia has been doing this so much," said Duke coach Joanne P. McCallie, who did not make players available after the game citing the quick turnaround for Sunday's 2 p.m. home game with Iona.

"I have a lot of confidence in her, and she can find stats all over the place. I thought she was really good, particularly in the second half.

Junior guard Karlee Taylor led Presbyterian (1-2) with a season-high 14 points.

"They're the third-ranked team in the country for a reason and they're very, very talented," Presbyterian coach Ronny Fisher said.

"They shoot the basketball real well and they're so big. We've played a lot of teams that have size, and you can play our zone and keep it out of the middle. But when you have size and the ability to shoot the 3 like that, it's very difficult to defend."

Duke center Elizabeth Williams, hampered with a stress fracture in her right leg since the Blue Devils' NCAA tournament games in March, sat out the first 10 minutes but finished with eight points and five rebounds in 11 minutes.

McCallie said Williams may play against Iona.

"She's incredible, she's the very best and I hope she doesn't get frustrated," McCallie said.

Freshman guard Alexis Jones started for Duke, scoring eight points with six assists.

Duke's junior forward Richa Jackson (knee), junior guard Chloe Wells (leg) and redshirt freshman forward Amber Henson (knee) did not play. The Blue Devils dressed 10 players including Jackson and played nine.

The Blue Devils outshot the visitors 52.3 percent to 45.7, outrebounded them 35-21 and committed 15 turnovers to Presbyterian's 30.

Duke has won 14 straight home openers.

The Blue Devils scored the first seven points of the game, the last five of those on a 3-pointer from Gray followed by a short Gray jumper.

The score was 13-6 after the Blue Hose's Dria David hit the first of two free throws with 14:15 left in the half. Duke answered with 18 straight points, with seven different players scoring before Presbyterian's Shonda Burnside hit a pair of free throws at 5:19.

The Blue Devils' biggest lead was 82-37 with 4:38 remaining in the game on a layup from freshman Sierra Moore.
