Chiney Ogwumike's record 52nd double-double paces Stanford

The All-America junior had a record 52nd double-double and set the Cardinal single-game mark with 24 rebounds. She also had 27 points in No. 4 Stanford's 74-50 win over Oregon on Sunday.

Ogwumike said she never saw her record-breaking day coming.

"It's extremely surprising, because I don't go into a game like, 'Oh, I'm going to go and break records!' " Ogwumike said. "No, I go in and try to play to the best of my ability, honestly. But I have such great teammates that are so unselfish, that always look for me every play and put me in a good position. Even with their passes, they lead me to where I should be finishing."

She also became the sixth player in team history with at least 1,000 rebounds (1,010) and 1,000 points (1,600).

"So I'm just really blessed and fortunate. ... And the best thing I can do, if they make a good pass to me, I can finish for them. If they take a shot, I want to have confidence I'm going to rebound and let them know that I have their back no matter what kind of shot there is."

Ogwumike, a junior, broke the career double-double record she had briefly shared with her older sister, Nnemkadi Ogwumike. Chiney, the Pac-12's leading scorer and rebounder, broke her sister's single-game rebounding record of 23, set last season against Oregon. The younger Ogwumike's previous career high for rebounds was 19, set at Tennessee on Dec. 12, 2012.

Ogwumike had a double-double in the first half with 14 rebounds and 11 points as the Cardinal built a commanding 40-22 lead. She made double-double history with 1:55 left in the half, taking a pass on the low block and scoring. That gave her 11 points to go with 11 rebounds.

The Cardinal (26-2, 15-1 Pac-12) won their 12th straight game since suffering a 67-55 loss to Cal on Jan. 13 and remained tied atop the conference standings with the Bears. Stanford beat Oregon (4-24, 2-14) for the 17th consecutive time, improving to 47-8 in the series and 26-1 at Maples Pavilion.

"I don't think we played particularly well," Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. "I thought we were kind of flat, honestly. But Chiney had a great game. She just really put this team on her back. I thought Amber (Orrange) stepped up. Otherwise, we weren't shooting well. What we did well, we got to the (offensive) boards. People were playing hard defensively. We tried to get in passing lanes and be aggressive. We're ready to finish up the regular season. We're ready to go to Washington and Washington State and get ready for the Pac-12 tournament."

Orrange had 12 points for Stanford, while Sara James and Bonnie Samuelson scored 8 apiece.

Stanford jumped to a quick 7-0 lead and pushed its advantage to 23-6. Galland led the Ducks with 9 first-half points, making all three of her shots from the field, including two 3s, and her lone free throw attempt.

"There's a history here," Ducks coach Paul Westhead said. "I only know the history of us against Stanford. I don't know how Stanford deals with others. But they get off to the best starts. So if that's their pattern, we sure let them set that pattern.

"It's just a hard thing to then dig back in and play even. I think the start was unfortunate. But, to their credit, they were making shots early, outside perimeter shots."

Alleyne, who entered the game averaging 13.2 points and 12.0 rebounds per game, had four rebounds but didn't score in the first half.

Stanford shot 44.4 percent (16 for 36) from the field and 35.7 percent (5 for 14) from 3-point range in the first half. Oregon shot 23.5 percent (8 for 34) from the field and 30 percent (3 for 10) from long range.

"I think we came out, we really prepared this week," Stanford's Joslyn Tinkle said. "We hit some big shots outside right away. Amber was hitting her shots, Sara James had a couple 3s out there, and i think that just kind of sparked momentum. There's more we could have done better, but I just think we knew coming into the game we were going to get our outside shot going, and then, obviously, Chiney was unstoppable in there."
