However, the Bears couldn't keep up with Kansas and finished with their lowest point total in more than 4 1/2 years.

"They gave us an old fashioned tail whooping," California head Lindsay Gottlieb said after her team lost 62-39 to the Jayhawks on Sunday.

Chelsea Gardner had 22 points and eight rebounds, Asia Boyd added 13 points and six boards off the bench for Kansas.

"We showed ourselves how confident we can be and we can compete with everybody any night," Boyd said.

Brittany Boyd had 12 points and five steals, and Reshanda Gray finished with 11 points and two rebounds for California (8-1).

"They shot the 3 well and got their inside touches, everything they wanted to do, they did," Gottlieb said. "We don't like to give people open 3s, we don't like to give up free throws, but look at the stats. We didn't do a good job in anything that we wanted to do."

California started the game out on top with a bucket from Gray, but that was the Bears' only lead. Kansas (7-2) was strong from behind the arc and played to that strength throughout the first half.

"I thought we did a really good job," Kansas coach Bonnie Henrickson said. "This group is unselfish and they recognize `it's not my shot, it's not your shot, it's our shot and if someone else has a better one then I'm going to let go of it and let you have it'."

The Bears came out aggressive in the second half, but couldn't get many of their shots to fall, shooting just 6 for 33 (18.2 percent).

Brittany Boyd fouled out with a little more than 4 1/2 minutes left, lessening the Bears' chances for a comeback.

Less than 30 seconds later, Cal starting forward Courtney Range went down hard and suffered an apparent left knee injury. She had to be carried off the court by assistant coach Jeff Cammon. Range finished with seven points and a team-high five rebounds.

Gottlieb didn't know the extent of Range's injury after the game, but said the Kansas medical team was taking a look at her and were on the phone with their doctors.

After Range's injury, Cal only made one more field goal the rest of the way and finished 15 for 26 (24 percent).

TIP-INS

Kansas: The last time Chelsea Gardner scored more than 20 points was against Temple. Gardner shot 7 for 17 from the field and 8 for 8 at the line against Kansas.

California: The reserves combined for only three points on 1-for-10 shooting from the field, scoring on a 3-pointer by senior forward Justine Hartman.

Kansas: In the Jayhawks' previous game against Incarnate Word, they were 8 of 19 (42 percent) on free throws. Against California, they shot 95 percent (19 for 20).

California: With her five steals, Brittany Boyd set the California all-time steals record with 296.
