Arizona State gets first win at Stanford since 1984

"Last time I won here, I played here," the Arizona State coach quipped. "About time. Just so proud of our team."

She shared this with her team, of course, and now it's "checked off the list."

Promise Amukamara had 17 points and seven rebounds and No. 13 Arizona State held off 11th-ranked Stanford 60-57 on Monday to stay unbeaten atop the Pac-12 standings despite the Cardinal's second-half rally.

The Sun Devils (17-1, 6-0 Pac-12) snapped a 16-game losing streak in the rivalry and won at Maples Pavilion for only the second time spanning 33 chances in program history and first since March 3, 1984.

Turner Thorne, in her 18th year leading ASU, had never beaten her Hall of Fame coach Tara VanDerveer on her old home floor after many frustrating finishes at Maples.

The Sun Devils had to play their swarming defense until the very end.

Briana Roberson knocked down a 3-pointer with 23.2 seconds left as Stanford pulled within 57-53, then Amber Orrange made an off-balance layin the next time down to make it a two-point game.

Sophie Brunner made two free throws with 11.1 seconds left, then Orrange drove the floor and scored again. After Alisha Davis hit one of two free throws, Stanford got the ball back with 2.6 seconds remaining down three. That came after an official review of which team had possession, and it was ruled a jump ball.

Orrange heaved the ball as the buzzer sounded, and Arizona State players ran to midcourt to celebrate.

Lili Thompson and Orrange scored 12 points each to lead Stanford (13-5, 5-1), which lost to Arizona State for the first time since Feb. 16, 2006, in Tempe.

Arizona State used a 19-6 run over the final 10 minutes of the first half on the way to a 39-22 lead at the break before being outplayed in the second half.

"We just didn't come out in the first half doing what we wanted to do," VanDerveer said. "We weren't rebounding, we weren't getting back in transition. We weren't aggressive. They have an excellent team to begin with and we have to play an A game the whole game against a team like that."

Stanford forced seven turnovers over the first 9½ minutes of the second half and opened with a 20-7 run to get right back in the game. The Cardinal closed within 46-42 on Erica McCall's basket with 8:13 to play, but missed key shots down the stretch after pulling as close as one point.

"Boom, we just regrouped," Turner Thorne said.

Katie Hempen added nine points and five assists for the Sun Devils, who won their 13th straight game since their lone defeat against Green Bay on Nov. 29.

Arizona State used a 14-2 run late in the first half and the cold-shooting Cardinal couldn't keep up on either end. They were outrebounded 24-10 in the first half and had surrendered 20 points in the paint.

Arizona State regularly drove through the paint to create easy baskets and held Stanford without a field goal for nearly 4½ minutes late in the first half.

The Sun Devils held a 44-22 rebounding advantage overall.

"Rebounding was huge," Amukamara said. "That's what we talked about, that was a key going in to this game."

FIRST-HALF WOES

Even with chances to win, Stanford couldn't overcome its slow start and playing catch up all game. Or its tough day on the boards.

"We don't want to get down in a game but the second half of this game showed us how good we can be," Orrange said.

Arizona State: The Sun Devils lost 80-56 on Stanford's home floor last season. ... ASU didn't miss its first shot until the 14:09 mark in the first half. ... The Sun Devils had 11 of their 20 offensive rebounds in the first half on the way to 18 second-chance points total.

Stanford: The Cardinal had won the previous 12 in the series by an average of nearly 20 points. ... Stanford shot 29 percent in the first half (7 for 24) and made only 2 of its 10 3-point tries.
