Arizona upsets Stanford to send Cardinal to 2nd straight Pac-12 loss
Stanford, which lost at Arizona State on Friday, lost back-to-back Pac-12 Conference games for the first time since getting swept on its Los Angeles trip in January of 2008 and now has three conference losses for the first time since 2005-06.
The Wildcats (9-14, 2-10) trailed 30-18 at halftime but held the Cardinal (17-7, 9-3) without a field goal for almost 10 minutes to get back in the game.
Lili Thompson opened the second half scoring for Stanford at 19:31, pushing the lead to 14. The next basket for the Cardinal was a layup by Amber Orrange at 9:49. When Charise Holloway scored at 10:15, Arizona trailed 36-35.
The Wildcats took a 46-43 lead on back-to-back baskets by LaBrittney Jones and JaLea Bennett, but Bonnie Samuelson and Orrange made consecutive 3s and Orrange made a steal and layup to make it 51-46 Cardinal at 3:40. Taylor Greenfield hit a 3 at 2:14 for an eight-point margin, but the Wildcats wouldn't quit.
After Samuelson's 3 at 1:18 gave Stanford a 57-50 lead, Holloway quickly answered with a 3. After a missed free throw, Warthen scored to make it 57-55. The Cardinal missed a 3 and Warthen was fouled. She made the first free throw and missed the second but Stanford knocked the ball out of bounds with eight seconds left. Warthen turned that into the game-winning jumper with 1.9 seconds to play.
Stanford had a late turnover and Warthen made two free throws.
Brenna Workman added 17 points for Arizona, which made just two 3s and shot 39.6 percent from the field. However, the Wildcats hit 16 of 21 free throws, 10 of 12 in the second half.
Orrange and Thompson had 13 each for Stanford, which was last swept in Arizona in February of 2004, the last time the Wildcats won the series. The Cardinal shot the same percent as Arizona but made just 7 of 22 3s and 8 of 13 free throws.
