Stony Brook Seawolves at Duke Blue Devils

No. 8 Duke routs Stony Brook 72-42

Sophomore Oderah Chidom scored 13 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the way for Duke (5-0), while freshman Sierra Calhoun also added 13 points.

"Oderah really showed the way in the second half," Duke coach Joanne McCallie said. "The team we played tonight was not a transition team."

Stony Brook (3-2) did everything it could to slow the game down. It held Duke to its lowest point total of the season but the Seawolves couldn't make it up on the offensive end.

Duke jumped out to an 11-0 lead but managed to hold a 29-19 margin at halftime on 29 percent shooting (9 of 31) against Stony Brook's packed-in zone defense.

But in the second half the Blue Devils heated up and made more shots and got better transition opportunities. Duke made 17 of 33 shots (51.5 percent) in the second half.

"They were disciplined against us," McCallie said. "They didn't take a shot until the last four or five seconds, especially in the first half. They made us play defense."

Duke's size advantage also played a key role in their 43-point second half.

"It was really a size factor on the boards," Stony Brook coach Caroline McCombs said. "We tried to attack, but not as much as I wanted us to."

Duke center Elizabeth Williams grabbed 12 boards as the Blue Devils outrebounded Stony Brook 56-31.

Stony Brook was led by Sabre Proctor with 10 points, all in the second half, while Kori Bayne-Walker added nine points.

Duke: The Blue Devils wrapped up a stretch of three home games and extended their winning streak against unranked teams at home to 135 games. Duke did it by controlling the boards. Elizabeth Williams with 12 and Oderah Chidom with 11, marking the fifth straight game with at least one player in double figures for rebounds.

Stony Brook: The Seawolves played Duke for the first time and it opened a five-game stretch of games on the road for Stony Brook.

Williams and Rebecca Greenwell failed to score in the first half for Duke but came back with good efforts in the second half. Williams finished with five points after not attempting a field goal in the first half. Greenwell bounced back from an 0-for-7 first half to score 10 points on 4-of-7 from the field in the second half.

MASH UNIT

Duke played without freshman Azura Stevens, who was held out because of an injured foot. Then in the second half, Williams went down with a sprained left ankle with about seven minutes left in the game. McCallie said Stevens should be ready to play against Texas A&M but Williams' availability will be determined closer to game time.
