No. 5 Maryland tops Indiana 86-63 to stretch win streak to 7

Shatori Walker-Kimbrough scored 16 points and fueled a third-quarter run Saturday that carried the Terrapins to an 86-63 victory, their seventh straight.

Brene Moseley also scored 16, and Brionna Jones had 10 points and 12 rebounds to help Maryland move into a first-place tie with Ohio State in the Big Ten.

The Terrapins (19-2, 8-1) let a 15-point lead dwindle to 41-34 before Walker-Kimbrough scored seven points in a 20-2 spree that turned the game into a rout. Jones contributed a layup and a three-point play to the surge.

Walker-Kimbrough fired away from the outside, and the 6-foot-3 Jones was too tough to handle in the paint.

"In the first half, their defense really was sucking in on me and that allowed my teammates to get open shots outside," Jones said. "In the second half they had to respect their shot, and that allowed me to get more open."

Jones, a junior center, scored all of her points in the second half. She came in needing six points to become the 31st player in school history to reach 1,000 for her career.

"It's an honor to be held in that class of players before me," he said.

"We need everyone," coach Brenda Frese said. "Everyone brings a different dimension that makes our team great. We want to continue to keeping having that depth, with every player ready to play."

Indiana (13-9, 5-5) had a chance until Maryland outscored the Hoosiers 32-12 in the third quarter.

"I just thought our energy was different," Frese said. "We locked in defensively, we were able to get stops, we were pushing in transition and Bri Jones came to life. We kind of got contributions from everybody."

Amanda Cahill scored 14 points and Tyra Buss added 13 for the Hoosiers, whose three-game winning streak ended. Indiana went 2 for 16 from beyond the arc.

"Maryland is a really good team, and they showed it," Indiana assistant coach Rhet Wierzba said. "In the third quarter, they came out and showed their dominance inside. I thought our team played hard, but he missed some shots early and dug ourselves a hole that was too much to come back from."

After the Hoosiers' Karlee McBride opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, Indiana missed 11 of its next 12 shots to fall behind 19-6.

Maryland led 23-10 after the first quarter and upped the margin to 15 before Indiana got five points from Buss in a 9-2 spurt.

Moseley scored Maryland's next 11 points to make it 38-24 late in the half.

After Indiana cut the gap early in the third quarter, Jones made a layup and Walker-Kimbrough followed with a 3-pointer and a layup. A three-point play by Jones and a layup by Walker-Kimbrough capped a 12-point run that spanned a mere 1 minute, 38 seconds.
