Stanford Cardinal at Arizona State Sun Devils

No. 14 Arizona State beats No. 9 Stanford 49-31

Holding traditional Pac-12 power and two-time national champion Stanford to its lowest point total in a game ever was quite a milestone, though, which the Sun Devils achieved in their 49-31 win.

"Third week of April we'll have a banquet and we'll look at what this team ultimately accomplishes and that will be on there," ASU coach Charli Turner Thorne said. "That'll be something fun to reflect on. But right now we're just going to keep grinding. We have a lot of basketball left and I think this team is showing that they can have a big year."

Sophie Brunner scored 12 points in No. 14 Arizona State's win over ninth-ranked Stanford, giving ASU a sweep of the two Bay Area schools, both nationally ranked. The Sun Devils (11-3, 2-0 Pac-12) won their eighth straight game and have wins in three of the last four meetings between the two teams, all three in regular-season play.

The Cardinal suffered through an awful night shooting, hitting just 11 of 43 shots.

Stanford (11-3, 1-1) lost for just the fourth time in the month of January over the past seven seasons and for only the 14th time in 71 meetings with ASU since Jan. 5, 1979. The Cardinal's previous worst game was a 32-point effort against Missouri on Jan. 2, 1984 in a 40-point loss.

"We have a lot of work to do on our offense. We struggled knocking down shots that we've been making all year," Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. "Credit their defense. Arizona State played very well. They're very aggressive and we just were not aggressive enough."

Arizona State controlled the boards 41-32 and had a seven-rebound edge on the offensive glass. Arnecia Hawkins added 12 points for the Sun Devils as the Cardinal's five-game win streak came to an end.

"It was whoever was going to hit first was going to get the rebounds," Brunner said. "We really took that to heart and we were the ones that hit first."

The Cardinal had hope in the third quarter thanks to a Sun Devil scoring drought that lasted almost five minutes, but Stanford still trailed by 12 during that stretch. ASU built its lead to 39-19 on a 3 from Elisha Davis with 1:55 to play in the quarter.

The Sun Devils didn't score for the first 3:43 of the fourth quarter but Stanford still couldn't make a significant dent in the deficit. Lili Thompson led the Cardinal with 7 points. The Sun Devils took a 26-9 lead late in the second quarter on a Davis 3-pointer, which came after ASU had hustled for an offensive rebound.

Only two baskets in the final 1:02 of the half by Stanford's Kaylee Johnson got the Cardinal into double digits in what was its lowest point total of both the first and second quarters (7 and 6 points) this season.

The Sun Devils controlled the first quarter in large part because Stanford went more than 6 1/2 minutes without a point. ASU could only build its lead to 10, 14-4, on a short jumper from Brunner with 1:34 left.

The Cardinal cut it to 14-7 by quarter's end but made only 3 of 13 shots, and 5 of 21 in the first half.

"They just kind of started getting tired early in the game," Brunner said.

TIP-INS

Stanford: The Cardinal entered Monday's game as the national leader in field goal defense at 29.9 percent shooting for opponents. ASU shot 31 percent . The Cardinal is 66-7 in conference road games since the 2007-2008 season. ... Stanford doesn't have a senior in the starting lineup for the first time since 2002-2003.

Arizona State: Turner Thorne played for VanDerveer for three years when in college. Turner Thorne has a bachelor's degree in psychology from Stanford. . Brunner, a junior, is ASU's active leader in rebounds with 529 in her career.

SWEEP SO SWEET

Davis a senior, from Oakland, Calif., said it was a little more special to sweep the Bay Area schools. ASU beat Cal 67-59 on Saturday. "It just speaks a lot to how much we've grown as a program," Davis said. "You always have people back home watching. I have a feeling towards both (teams) and it all equates to wanting to get that win regardless."
