No. 6 Florida State women roll past No. 13 Duke, 69-45

FSU held the No. 13 Blue Devils to season lows in points and shooting as it rolled to a 69-45 win before a program-record crowd of 6,687 at the Tucker Center.

"Our focus was on defense and I thought it was exceptional," Florida State coach Sue Semrau said. "For our team defense to hold two of the top scorers in the conference to a combined 10 points was quite an accomplishment."

Duke (14-2, 2-1 ACC), which saw its 10-game winning streak snapped, came into the game shooting a conference-best 49.8 percent from the field but were 15 of 59 (25.4 percent). That is the third-lowest percentage that FSU has held an opponent in an ACC game. It is the lowest by a conference opponent against the Seminoles since Wake Forest shot 21.8 percent in a 2010 game.

For Duke, it tied for the eighth-fewest points and field goal percentage in program history.

Rebecca Greenwell, who is third in the ACC in scoring at 18.9 points per game, was held to two points and Lexie Brown (18.1, fifth) scored eight.

"I feel like we took what the coaches told us and applied it to the game," said Shakayla Thomas, who led FSU (15-2, 3-1) with 22 points, including 16 in the second half.

The Seminoles (15-2, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) never trailed and took control with a 14-4 run during a 6:04 span at the end of the first period and beginning of the second.

Duke hit consecutive shots from the field just once and had an eight-minute stretch where it missed 12 straight. Kyra Lambert led the Blue Devils with 12 points.

"I thought there were some points where we shot it a little too quickly when open and tried to rush things. Those are the points when we have to slow things down," Duke coach Joanne P. McCallie said.

TIP-INS

Florida State's previous best attendance for a women's game was 6,440 against UConn in 2009. ... The Blue Devils are one of the better 3-point shooting teams in the nation, averaging 5.9 per game, but were 0 for 11 from beyond the arc. That snapped a 56-game streak where they had made a 3-pointer. ... FSU's 24-point win over the Blue Devils is its largest in series history. It won by 16 points in each of the past two meetings.

BIG PICTURE

Duke: Brown was 4 of 4 from the line and extended her ACC record of consecutive free throws to 53, which is tied for sixth in NCAA history. Bowling Green's Lauren Prochaska holds the NCAA mark with 70 in 2011.

Florida State: Imani Wright continues to do well against ranked teams. The junior, who had 13 points, is averaging 16.8 points in five games with 17 of her 29 field goals coming on 3-pointers.

POLL IMPLICATIONS

FSU had lost to North Carolina State last Monday, but with wins over North Carolina and Duke, it should remain in the Top 10 when the latest rankings are released on Monday. Duke had a big win at home against No. 8 Louisville earlier in the week but could drop a few spots after Sunday's loss.
