Bane, Morant score 25 apiece to lead Grizzlies past Bulls

Brandon Clarke added 15 points and seven rebounds, missing only one of his eight shots.

“I thought our guys came out ready,” Memphis interim coach Darko Rajakovic said. “… I thought we did a really good job defensively. To be honest with you, I thought we were supposed to score even more. We missed a couple of chippies, a couple of open looks that we usually make.”

DeMar DeRozan led the Bulls with 24 points and five assists, Ayo Dosunmu had 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Coby White finished with 16 points, six rebounds and five assists for Chicago, which lost its fourth straight.

It was the Grizzlies’ main event of their 20th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, only a short distance from the Grizzlies’ home floor at FedExForum.

Memphis built a double-digit lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Bulls 38-25 for a 58-45 lead at half, then stretched the advantage to 23 in the third — and didn’t stop there.

“I thought we kind of got bogged down,” Bulls coach Billy Donovan said of the second quarter. “We had some possessions there that weren’t great, and then I think the other thing too was the turnovers really hurt us.”

Chicago also was stymied early by a dozen turnovers, allowing Memphis to benefit from its transition game. The Bulls would end up with 18 turnovers, leading to 21 Grizzlies points.

The Bulls entered the day as the top team in the Eastern Conference, but were without key rotation players like Zach LaVine, Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso. However, Chicago kept its top spot because Brooklyn lost to Cleveland on Monday.

“I feel like this is a chance for us to grow,” White said of filling in for Ball and LaVine in the Bulls' starting backcourt. “Now, we’re getting the opportunity, and I feel like we’re just taking it day-by-day and trying to just grow and develop and get better for the team.”

For Memphis, it was a step in the right direction after its 11-game winning streak ended Friday in a loss to the Dallas Mavericks – the first Grizzlies loss since Dec. 23.

Monday's win was also a momentum-builder for a four-game road trip that begins Wednesday in Milwaukee.

“It was big time for us, especially coming off the loss,” Morant said. “We had to turn the page and get back in the column we want to be in, which is the winning column and start a new streak.”

Grizzlies forward Jaren Jackson Jr. left the floor limping in the second quarter after apparently being hit in the calf, which led to some pain. “My leg was like dead-leg for a second,” Jackson said after the game. “It was weird ... you can’t like feel your leg, like you stub your toe for a second. You don’t really feel like doing anything for a second. So, I just had to come out for a minute.

“I knew I was coming back in. I knew how I walked off looked all weird.”
