Match Timeline

  • 0': All the quarter-final first leg action as Sir Bob returns to Eindhoven. Kicking off at 19.45 BST
  • 0': Kieron Dyer is ruled out with a hamstring injury. The 25-year-old's place is taken by Jermaine Jenas, who returns to the starting line-up after shaking off a knee problem. Sir Bobby Robson keeps faith with his central defensive pairing of Jonathan Woodgate and Titus Bramble despite Andy O'Brien's return to fitness.
  • 0': PSV coach Guus Hiddink, who is without the injured Arjen Robben and the suspended Kevin Hofland, fielded the same 11 men who cruised to a 4-0 league victory at Waalwijk at the weekend.
  • 1': PSV get this UEFA Cup tie under way.
  • 2': Kezman goes down in the area under the challenge of Bramble, but it's a fine tackle
  • 3': Park looks to get onto the cut-back, and again it's a top, strong challenge from the young English defender to win the ball just as the shot was about to come in
  • 4': Ambrose looks to break down the right, giving chase to Lee, but he clips the PSV player's heel. Free-kick
  • 5': Now Bernard fells Park and it's a chance to deliver into the box. De Jong floats it in from the right and Shearer rises to head clear inside his own box
  • 6': Free-kick to Newcastle in a dangerous area - Shearer's shirt was being tugged at. It's 10 yards outside the box in a central position - Robert takes and hits the wall
  • 7': Two foul throws in a row. PSV to Newcastle and back to PSV again. No-one knows what's going on!
  • 8': Kezman gets it on the left and manages to cut inside of Woodgate for the cross - Jenas does well to get back and head clear
  • 9': Free-kick to Newcastle just inside their own half. Woodgate looks long for Shearer, but it's too strong and Waterreus collects
  • 10': Hand-ball against Robert mid-way inside his own half. De Jong floats it in and Hughes heads away
  • 11': Bellamy's unhappy with a decision given against him - for a change - leading to a few words from referee Veissiere
  • 12': Van der Schaaf brings down Shearer - at least his third foul of the game - and that lands the PSV player with a yellow card. He'll have to be careful against Bellamy and Shearer now
  • 13': It's a very even start to the game. No effort on goal as yet as Newcastle look happy to allow PSV to push on early doors
  • 14': Kezman picks up on a mistake by Hughes, nicking the ball off his boot, and runs at Bramble. He gets to the edge of the area before looking up and producing a curling effort...
  • 15': GOAL!!!!!
  • 16': Hughes failed to deal with the flick on by Vennegoor of Hesselink, when he really should have, but Kezman produced a fantastic effort which flew into the top right-hand corner. Advantage PSV
  • 17': Speed tries a speculative effort from 25-yards, forcing a fine, diving save from Waterreus who tips it over
  • 18': Robert takes the corner, it's scrambled away and eventually comes to Ambrose on the edge of the box - but his shot is straight into the grasp of Waterreus
  • 19': Newcastle will be looking for at least one away goal tonight, and they've responded well to going behind
  • 20': Park shows great skill to get to the by-line and cut it back, but Given collects down low before the ball runs to the waiting Vennegoor of Hesselink
  • 21': De Jong's free-kick from 40 yards out floats straight to Given
  • 22': Vennegoor of Hesselink is pulled back by Hughes - who's having a mare - just outside the box. A real chance here
  • 23': The free-kick is whipped in, and Shearer clears after the block by Hughes
  • 24': Van Bommell's fine lofted ball towards the penalty spot finds Kezman, who gets in between Woodgate and Hughes, but he heads over. A missed opportunity for a second
  • 25': Bernard does superbly to get away down the left. Bellamny's unmarked in the centre, but Waterreus does excellently to claw it away from the Welsh striker. Newcastle's best move so far
  • 26': Robert looks for Shearer over the top, he's in space but the volley is wild - another half chance
  • 27': Bramble wins the ball from Park - he goes down and the linesman waves play-on. Only then the ref - much further away - gives the foul right by the corner flag! Awful decision
  • 28': De Jong curls it in, it's ease for Woodgate to head away
  • 29': Bellamy plays the reverse ball to find Jenas in the area, only for Bouma to make a fine challenge and win it
  • 30': Corner to Newcastle United. Robert takes from the right but Waterreus is there to punch to safety
  • 31': Newcastle are improving now - finally managing to put some passes together
  • 32': Referee Veissiere has words with the Newcastle bench - the coaching staff are far from hapy with the number of decisions going the Dutch side's way
  • 33': Robert is spoken to after a foul on Lee - another decision for PSV
  • 34': Park does well to turn inside and find De Jong - Jenas tracks back to make the tackle
  • 35': Bellamy is pushed by Van der Schaaf, although it's a soft decision. Robert can curl into the box from the left but Shearer cannot direct his header goalwards
  • 36': The game is so stop-start, the referee just will not let the game flow
  • 37': Bellamy and Hughes link-up well down the right and the latter crosses for Shearer - who again sees his header expertly pushed over
  • 38': The corner comes in, and it just hits Bogelund and runs to Waterreus
  • 39': Bogelund needs a bit of treatment picking up a knock there, he'll be okay
  • 40': Shearer has his shirt tugged by Bouma, free-kick on the edge of the D. Good chance
  • 41': Shearer and Jenas stand over it, it's tapped to the former England skipper but his shot hits a defender
  • 42': Woodgate does well up against Kezman, holding off the striker to stride out of defence
  • 43': Bellamy looks to break forward - Bouma make a good challenge to thwart his burst
  • 44': Robert floats in the free-kick, it evades everyone and goes out for a throw-in
  • 45': Van der Schaaf goes down in the area clutching his head - the referee didn't see what happened. The PSV players are furious - leading to a yellow card for De Jong. It looks like Bramble raised an arm but he's going to escape action
  • 45': Two minutes to be added on
  • 45': Van der Schaaf will be okay to continue and the ref restarts with a drop-ball
  • 45': Van der Schaaf, walking a tightrope for a red card, blocks off Bernard just outside the box. Robert floats it to the back stick for the head of Jenas.....
  • 45': GOAL!!!!!
  • 45': Jenas was unmarked, he cushioned his header back across the face of goal and into the back of the net. All square
  • 45': And that's half-time
  • 45': Newcastle grabbed a deserved equaliser more than three minutes into injury time - time that only existed due to Bramble's off-the-ball foul on Van der Schaaf
  • 45': Bramble was lucky to get away with his stray arm finding the face of van der Schaaf - who then gave away the free-kick which enabled Newcastle to level
  • 46': The second half gets under way
  • 47': Park flops to the ground when battling with Bernard - never a penalty and the ref waves play on
  • 48': De Jong is clipped by Speed in the centre-circle, free-kick
  • 49': Now Park goes down again - terrible decision. He went down long after the challenge was made, shocking dive
  • 50': De Jong floats it in, Given's punch is poor allowing Bouma to shoot - Woodgate blocks
  • 51': Corner to PSV. De Jong floats in it centrally, Bouma wins the header, it smacks off the bar and it's scrambled away. Close call for the Magpies
  • 52': Corner to PSV again from De Jong, Given flaps once more - leaving Bramble to make a fine tackle on Bouma. The loose ball falls to Lee but he drags his effort wide of the post
  • 53': Lee does well against Ambrose on the left and his cross is headed behind by Bernard. De Jong takes the corner van der Schaaf wins the header and claims handball against Jenas - no penalty
  • 54': PSV are piling on the pressure now, trying to regain the advantage
  • 55': Newcastle playing a bit of keep-ball now, working it back to Given
  • 56': De Jong looks hurt after the challenge from Hughes - but the ref isn't impressed and tells him to get up
  • 57': Shearer is penalised for backing into Colin. Free-kick to PSV on the edge of their own box
  • 58': Another free-kick to PSV, this time about 15 yards outside the box onthe left, following a foul by Woodgate. Van Bommell takes, Given punches clear
  • 59': Park's wayward cross from the right causes Given a bit of concern, but it drops over the bar
  • 60': Park does well to run onto a return ball from Vennegoor of Hesselink, but Jenas is wise to it and intercepts
  • 61': PSV seem to have run out of steam a bit now - can Newcastle again come on strong?
  • 62': Jenas finds Ambrose on the edge of the box, he jinxs to make space but fires inches wide. The ref gives a corner then changes his mind - and the keeper DID touch it
  • 63': PSV are struggling to make space as they have done
  • 64': Bogelund crosses for Kezman, and his fine overhead kick flies inches over the bar. Superb effort
  • 65': A change for PSV - Johann Vogel is on for Remco van der Schaaf
  • 66': A second in quick succession - Dennis Rommedahl replaces John de Jong
  • 67': Jenas pulls back Van Bommel and gets a yellow card for it
  • 68': The free-kick is ten yards outside the box. Two stand over it and it's Bouma who fires well over the bar - a poor effort
  • 69': Rommedahl gets in behind the defence - but the flag eventually goes up. He was miles offside - what took him so long?
  • 70': Newcastle are struggling as an attacking force now - happy with the draw, maybe
  • 71': Vennegoor of Hesselink tries to nod it on for Kezman - Woodgate does well to clear
  • 72': Rommedahl almost gets in behind Bernard - but Bernard makes the tackle and it's corner
  • 73': It comes in from the right and Bellamy is back to hack away
  • 74': No sign of any changes from Newcastle at the moment - maybe the fresh legs of Viana will get a run-out
  • 75': Kezman gets it inside the box and fires the shot in early, it more hits Given than it being a save but it's effective enough
  • 76': Bouma's free-kick is flicked on by Vennegoor of Hesselink again - Woodgate once more beats Kezman to it
  • 77': Free-kick on the right, Van Bommel on the right and a combination of Bramble and Ambrose get it away
  • 78': Kezman turns Bramble but the defender does not let him out of his sights, good work
  • 79': Kezman crosses from the right and Woodgate gets in front of Vennegoor of Hesselink to give away the corner
  • 80': Van Bommel takes it from the right, Bouma wins the header only to see it loop into the grasp of Given
  • 81': Robert is held back by Rommedahl, a rare free-kick to the visitors
  • 82': Van Bommel almost gets in behind the defence - but the impressive Bramble is there again to win the ball
  • 83': Rommedahl gets away down the right, Kezman waits in the centre. The cross comes in but it's just too high for the striker - a lucky escape
  • 84': Vogel makes a poor pass, letting Bellamy in to run at Bouma, he taps it to Shearer who's shot it punched over by Waterreus. Corner
  • 85': Robert takes, Waterreus doesn't get there but Bramble does. He taps it back to Hughes who flashes wide
  • 86': Jenas goes down, he collided with Waterreus. The goalkeeper wanted a foul and is booked for his troubles
  • 87': Jenas stays down and is showered with a few missiles - one looks to be a lighter, and even an orange
  • 88': Shearer does well to win the foul off Vogel and eat up some more time
  • 89': Now Park trips Hughes as we move closer to the final whistle
  • 90': A change for Newcastle as skipper Alan Shearer is replaced by Shola Ameobi
  • 90': Five minutes to be added on, found from somewhere!
  • 90': Newcastle look comfortable now
  • 90': Newcastle win the corner. Robert takes it short to Ameobi and Newcastle simply work it back to Given, happy with the scoreline
  • 90': And that's the final whistle
  • 90': It was a decent match, and Newcastle got the result they seemingly came for - the scoring draw
