Match Timeline
- 0': An away goal to the good, Bobby's boys take on the Robben-less PSV. Join us at 7.45pm for live coverage.
- 0': The visitors get us underway and the sides begin to fight it out for a semi final berth against either Marseilles or Inter Milan
- 1': Shearer shows his usual strength to hold of a pair of defenders to earn Newcastle a throw in right out by the corner flag
- 2': Gary Speed tries a clever backheel to release Bellamy. It was neither accurate nor clever and goes for a throw.
- 3': A noisy St James' Park seems to have a big appetite for this game
- 4': Bellamy, at the opposite corner flag to Shearer, cannot hold off the challenge of three defenders but Hughes comes in with a barnstorming challenge to ensure the Dutch side can't profit. Tremendous tackle
- 5': Sheaer wins a towering header on the corner of the 18 yard box but his flick is asking too much of Bellamy
- 6': Decent holding play again from the Newcastle captain allows Bernard to overlap and put in a cross. Only reaches the first defender though and is cleared
- 7': Newcastle, as they did against Arsenal in the week, are making the early running
- 8': Shearer twists and turns in the box trying to find an angle to shoot from. Finally pulls the trigger but a great block challenge from de Jong denies him. Corner ball
- 9': Corner swung in to the near post where that man Shearer stands firm and bullets a header between post and keeper for the opening goal of the night. Classic Shearer. 1-0 Newcastle
- 11': Great searching ball over the top from Bramble looks to exploit Bellamy's pace. Very nearly does as Bouma is forced to concede a corner
- 12': Corner is not a good one and is easily cleared but only to a Newcastle man
- 13': Hughes steps up to bend in a cross aimed towards the penalty spot where Bramble evades his marker to meet it but the contact is not good. A difficult chance but he should have done better
- 14': Rommedahl is afforded a massive amount of space to cross from the right. A deep one clears everyone except Kezman who fluffs his volley. It wasn't easy but Newcastle are a little lucky to get away with some sloppy play
- 16': Woodgate shows great tenacity to follow up a first half-tackle with a heavy second to start a Newcastle break. Referee blows up for a foul though when it looked ok to me
- 17': After the usual opening quick fire pace the game has settled down a bit
- 19': Hughes again lets Park know he's in a game with a bone crunching, but fair, challenge out wide
- 20': Well worked move down the right sees Hughes chip forward to Bellamy who, after a bounce, sends it over first time looking for Shearer but it is fractionally long and Bouma clears
- 21': Ambrose robs van Bommel in the middle before playing long for Shearer to chase - too long though and it goes for a throw
- 23': PSV are starting to string passes together for the first time in the match but still nothing created in the final third
- 24': A few stray passes suggest that the pitch is a bit cut up and not playing well at all
- 25': Now it is the small band of PSV fans' turn to dominate the singing. Around 1,000 of them in the ground and it looks like every single one is in good voice
- 26': Ambrose tracks back Park after losing possession. Park falls under his attention and picks up the ball. Referee rightly gives handball against him
- 28': After the excitement of an early goal the game has gone flat, dull, listless etc...
- 30': Bernard gets caught in possession at full back and is fortunate to get away with it as Rommedahl's pass is off target
- 31': Great ball forward from Speed picks out his countryman Bellamy in the PSV box. The ball was running away from him a little and he is forced quite wide until the shooting angle is too tight and he hits the side netting
- 32': Jenas muscles his way past a couple of weak challenges on the edge of the PSV box, dead centre, before letting fly a dipping effort that needed more power to trouble Waterreus
- 33': Bernard plays a flighted diagonal ball from a free kick deep on the left aimed for Shearer. Despite being fouled by the Englishman, Bouma wins the header. Gets the free kick as well
- 34': De Jong wins a 50-50 with Speed in the middle and releases Kezman on the right. He cuts back to Vogel who's slide rule ball into the box is read easily by Woogate.
- 36': Ambrose is crunched on the ball but, despite his protests it was fair. Bellamy takes up the gauntlet and it is his cross that is deflected behind for a corner
- 37': Great high, swinging, pwerful corner from Robert finds Jenas at the back stick but he just struggles to get his head over the ball and his effort pings off him over the bar. Difficult chance because of the ball's pace but he will be kicking himself
- 38': That chance seems to have reignited the locals vocal passions after they had, understandably, been bored by what they were watching
- 39': PSV offering nothing up front due to having a five man midfield that is just not supporting Kezman. He's up on his own and in Bramble/Woodgate's pocket
- 41': Really, really dull period of the game - possession given and taken without much attacking endeavour - but Newcastle will be happy as they hold the lead
- 42': Bellamy's keen running unnerves Bogelund and Colin and he nicks between the two to keep the ball in play in the PSV box. Bogelund recovers in time to stop Shearer profiting
- 43': From the resulting punt up field Kezman takes possession but he is all alone against the entire Newcastle back line. Bramble takes the honours and robs him comfortably
- 44': One minute of added time to be played
- 45': Ambrose corner from the right is cleared by Colin and the half comes to and end. 1-0 Newcastle at the break
- 45': A decent opening ten minutes - where Newcastle were well on top and scored through Shearer's reliable old head from a corner - gave way rapidly to some sterile, insipid play from both sides. PSV have offered almost nothing up front, playing with five in the middle - this must surely change after the interval.
- 45': Newcastle have gone about their task adequately but without much inspiration. The running of Bellamy and strength of Shearer have carried the greatest goal threat. Hopefully the second half will pick up a bit
- 45': Second half is under way and Rommedahl has made way for the man with quiter possibly the longest name I have ever seen - Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. From here on to be called Hesselink
- 46': Psv already looking mre direct and lively as Lee powers down the left flank but a little too quickly and loses control of the ball. Goal kick but at least promising from the Dutch side
- 47': Deep free kick from van Bommel is sloppy and gifts Shearer space to take the ball forward before de Jong saves his team mate's blushes
- 48': Woodgate and Kezman - who have clashed a couple of times already this half - get a talking to from the referee who has had a decent game
- 49': Kezman gets a start on woodgate for the first time in the evening but Bramble rushes across to deny him just outside the six yard box
- 50': Newcastle go to sleep as first Park is allowed to cross from the left. Bernard though is there but delays a clearance allowing Lee in before tripping the PSV man for a penalty
- 51': Kezman steps up and ther is no doubt as soon as foot strikes ball. Given goes left, the ball goes right at speed, and PSV are level 1-1
- 52': Robert looks to respond quickly. A shot from distance onlt slightly to the left of centre bounces just in front of the keeper forcing him to only parry it. Gets enough on it though to put it out of danger
- 53': A different game now as PSV are rewarded for endeavour and Newcastle appear stung by the manner of the equaliser.
- 54': Nice footwork from Given after a short pas back from Jenas. Sells Hesselink a dummy and plays clear. Nice
- 56': Bramble lives on the edge of his luck by a lunging tackle on van Bommel right on the corner of the area. Definitely seen those given and I suspect that were it not for the previous penalty he would have given it. Bramble didn't make much contact but he is a lucky boy non-the-less
- 57': Waterreus in the PSV goal appears, strangley, to be time wasting - taking and age to clear his lines
- 58': Bellamy is on the shoulder of the last defender, Bogelund, but he stands up firm, plays back to his own keeper, and holds off the Welshman - good defending
- 59': Right out by the left corner flag Ambrose is sucked into a foul on de Jong. Good crossing opportunity
- 60': Ball over the top is perfect for Given and he simply jumps and collects under no pressure at all
- 61': Another wonderful chance for Bramble. Free kick fromt he left touchline, 35 yards back, is played in viciously from Robert and Bramble runs across his marker for a header 8 yards out. For the second time on the night he can't direct it goalwards. Should have put at least one away
- 62': Lee finds himself well forward on the left. Cuts inside, shows good feet with some step overs and then drills it towards Givens near post. Was going in but Given reacts well
- 63': Better from Newcastle. Shearer holds it up before laying back to Robert. He shows a positive attitude to drive forward and poke a pass through for Bellamy. A yard in front of him. Had it not been, it would have been a fine chance. Good football
- 65': Goal for Newcastle and the lead is theirs again!
- 66': Robert inswinging corner to the far post while the defence is preoccupied with Shearer at the near. Arriving late - and very, very high - was Gary Speed who makes no mistake from 8 yards. Question mark over the keeper not coming but the box was crowded. 2-1 Newcastle on the night
- 67': PSV look to strike back as Hesselink has a snap shot from outside the area. Little pace but Given still needs to pay attention to it
- 68': St James' Park has come to life again
- 69': Swift pasing move almost the full lenght of the pitch is halted by a great piece of play from Colin who had tracked Bellamy all the way before a perfectly timed foot in
- 70': Sloppy play from Bramble gives de Jong the chance to turn and look for Kezman in space. A better pass would have put him but Bramble gets away with it
- 72': A cross from the left by Kezman sees a host of blue shirts attacking it. Given has to come a long, long way to get it and had to make absolutely sure. He did
- 73': Newcastle free kick just wide right of the goal, 35 yards out? Robert shot of course. Decent enough effort from the Frenchman but the keeper had an age to line himself up and catch it
- 74': Free kick punted hopefully long into the Newcastle box. A push on Woodgate renders meaningless the fact that Kezman had the freedom of the area.
- 75': Second PSV substitution of the night. Vogel leaves the field and on comes Johan Vonlanthen
- 76': ewcastle subsitution. Andy O'Brien replaces Bramble, who has picked up a bit of a knock
- 77': Jenas demonstrates the application that Newcastle need to see out this game by tracking back from midfield the dangerous looking de Jong. Quality timed tackle
- 78': Bellamy is off the field at the moment due to some sort of problem with his boots
- 79': And another change. Darren Ambrose - a hard working and creative player tonight - is replaced by Shola Ameobi
- 80': Kezman and Lee work the ball well down the left but Hughes stands up and takes the ball off the strikers toes. Hughes has been solid all night long
- 82': Ameobi dances in his awkward looking way across the PSV back line. A shot looked on but instead he plays wide to Robert. He doesn't need asking twice to let one fly but his effort is smothered by Colin
- 83': Tension has fallen over the majority of the crowd
- 84': Clumsy challenge from Woodgate more than anything on Bogelund gives PSV a free kick, dead centre but 30 yeards out
- 85': Bouma it is that stikes, or rather place, it. Given is forced into a leaping fully stretched one handed save. Excellent goalkeeping
- 86': Jenas living dangerously as a firm back header to Given requires the keeper to be brave and beat the oncoming Kezman to the ball
- 88': PSV seem to have taken the initiative and there are nervous moments ahead for Newcastle.
- 89': Bellamy is intelligent when he picks up the ball deep and runs directly at a tired defence. gets to the by-line but can't cross to the arriving Shearer. He does earn a corner
- 90': Corner over finds Shearer but he is leaning heavily on his marker and is correctly penalised for a push
- 90': Three minutes of added time to be played
- 90': Bouma, the PSV centre back, arrives on the edge of the Newcastle box with the ball. Options in the area but he elects to shoot. Needed to be good - but wasn't. A wasted ball
- 90': Newcastle look to waste a few seconds by taking off Rober and putting on Hugo Viana
- 90': The whistle is blown and it is Newcastle who progress into the semi final of the Uefa cup to play Marseille - conquers of Inter Milan. Final score 2-1 (3-2 overall).
- 90': A second half that helped erase memories of a poor opening period, largely thanks to the fact that PSV came out to play. An early goal through a penalty set the tie up nicely and, though the quality wasn't great from either side, a keenly contested cup tie was played out. Newcastle shaded it and deserved the narrow victory
