Tulsa Shock at Seattle Storm
· Women's National Basketball AssociationSkylar Diggins helps Shock hold off Seattle for 1st win
Glory Johnson had 17 points and nine rebounds to lead Tulsa (1-4). Candice Wiggins added 13 points and Kayla Pedersen 10.
"It was huge," said Wiggins, who hit three 3-pointers. "It's just so great to win here in KeyArena. Even when I was with the Lynx last year, it was hard to win here. Obviously, they're a different team this year, but we're a different team, too."
Tina Thompson scored 17 points for Seattle (1-2), and Temeka Johnson added 13. The Storm were 0-for-17 on 3s, just the third time in franchise history they failed to make one.
"I tried to attack, but when you're a shooter, you never stop shooting because you believe that the next one is going to go in," Temeka Johnson said about the missed 3s against her former team. "Any of our people on this team, when they miss 17, I'm going to pass it to them again because the 18th one is going in. We ran the same things we run in practice but the shots didn't fall."
Thompson, Tanisha Wright and Noelle Quinn each missed four attempts from beyond the arc.
"Our defense really had a lot of energy all game and our backcourt pressure bothered them," Tulsa coach Gary Kloppenburg said.
Diggins, the third overall pick in this year's WNBA draft, hit a basket and four free throws to help hold off the Storm, who had closed to 57-52.
Temeka Johnson scored nine in the third quarter to help the Storm take a four-point lead. But Tulsa finished the quarter on an 8-1 run, including an inside basket by Nicole Powell just prior to the buzzer to put the Shock up 48-45.
Wiggins and Pedersen scored eight apiece to help the Shock to a 34-29 halftime lead. Pederson hit 4 of 5 shots from the field.
Thompson had 10 for the Storm, who took a brief 21-20 lead early in the second quarter before the Shock scored seven straight.
Tulsa played without starters Liz Cambage (ankle sprain) and Tiffany Jackson-Jones (ankle stress fracture) as well as top reserve Riquna Williams (undisclosed) because of injuries.
"Having injuries wears on us a little bit, but we know everybody has to fight through adversity," Glory Johnson said. "When you're tired, you just have to focus on the next play. It was pretty tough for us, but I'll be happy when everybody is healthy and we have a full team."
Seattle is playing all season without injured stars Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson, who are rehabbing from surgeries.
"There are other teams that are battling injuries, too," Kloppenburg said. "It's just something that happens with the league. It's always the situation where somebody else has to step up and do more and play more minutes."
The Shock added Courtney Paris as an emergency pickup because the roster had dropped to eight healthy players, three fewer than the league limit.
