McCoughtry hit a long jumper from the wing to extend Atlanta's lead to 75-67 with 1:27 left and made a steal on Connecticut's next possession, leading to Hayes' fast-break layup.
Alex Bentley's 3-point play pulled Connecticut to 77-73 with 41 seconds left but Atlanta made 6 of 8 free throws to seal it.
Carla Cortijo added 13 points and Elizabeth Williams had 11 for Atlanta (6-1), which is ranked No. 3 in the AP WNBA power poll. McCoughtry was 10 of 16 from the field and Hayes sank 11 of 13 free throws.
Atlanta trailed 30-23 before Cortijo scored eight straight to start a 13-0 run for a six-point lead. McCoughtry's floater in the lane gave Atlanta a 43-39 lead at the break and the Dream scored the first six points of the third quarter.
Alex Bentley scored 16 points for 12th-ranked Connecticut (1-6). The Sun have lost five in a row.
